Are Plain Wedding Dresses Boring?

When it comes to wedding dresses and fashion, the term "plain" might conjure images of simplicity and understatement. However, labelling plain wedding dresses as boring couldn't be further from the truth. Let's delve into why plain wedding dresses are anything but dull and how they can be the perfect choice for your big day.

Elegance in Simplicity

Plain wedding dresses exude an elegance that is both timeless and sophisticated. The beauty of these dresses lies in their simplicity, allowing the bride's natural beauty and personality to shine through. Without the distraction of heavy embellishments or intricate lace, plain wedding dresses offer a clean slate for brides who appreciate understated grace.

Versatility and Customization

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a plain wedding dress is its versatility. These dresses serve as a blank canvas, allowing for endless customization options. Whether you want to add sleeves, a statement overlay, a sparkling necklace, or a dramatic veil, a plain dress can be easily personalized to match your unique style.

A Note on Accessories

While accessorizing is a wonderful way to add personal touches, it's important to strike the right balance. When it comes to plain wedding dresses, less is often more. Adding too much sparkle, such as a glittery belt or a chunky necklace, can sometimes detract from the dress's elegant simplicity and risk making the outfit look dated. Instead, consider subtle and refined accessories that enhance rather than overwhelm the dress. A delicate piece of jewelry or a simple veil can maintain the dress's modern and timeless appeal.

Focus on Silhouette

Plain wedding dresses highlight the importance of silhouette. The cut and fit of the dress become the focal point, emphasizing the bride's figure in the most flattering way. Whether it's a sleek mermaid, a classic A-line, or a romantic ball gown, the shape of the dress can make a powerful statement on its own.

Trending Silhouettes: Basque and Dropped Waists

Two silhouettes that are making a strong comeback in bridal fashion are basque and dropped waists. These designs add a vintage charm while maintaining a modern edge. A basque waist, which dips into a V-shape, beautifully accentuates the waistline and elongates the torso, creating a flattering and regal look. Similarly, dropped waists, which sit lower on the hips, offer a sleek and elongated silhouette that is perfect for brides looking for something different and stylish.

Minimalism is Modern

In recent years, minimalism has become a major trend in fashion, and bridal wear is no exception. Modern brides are increasingly drawn to the clean lines and sophisticated simplicity of plain wedding dresses. This trend is all about stripping away the excess and focusing on what truly matters: the love and commitment shared on your wedding day.

Trending Fabrics: Crepes, Silks, Satins, Mikados, and Jacquards

The fabric of a plain wedding dress plays a crucial role in its overall impact. At & Wolf Bridal, we offer a range of luxurious fabrics that enhance the elegance of plain designs:

  • Crepe: Known for its crisp and lightweight texture, crepe drapes beautifully, creating a smooth and flattering silhouette.

  • Silk: The epitome of luxury, silk offers a soft and luminous finish, making it a timeless choice for brides.

  • Satin: With its glossy surface and substantial weight, satin brings a sense of opulence and formality to plain wedding dresses.

  • Mikado: This heavier fabric has a slight sheen and offers structure and volume, perfect for creating dramatic shapes.

  • Jacquard: Known for its intricate woven patterns, jacquard adds subtle texture and depth to plain dresses, making them unique and visually interesting.

Spotlight on the Bride

With a plain wedding dress, the spotlight remains firmly on the bride. The simplicity of the dress allows your natural beauty, radiance, and confidence to take centre stage. This can be especially appealing for brides who want their presence, rather than their attire, to be the main attraction.

Designer Appeal

At & Wolf Bridal, we stock exclusive designers who understand the art of creating stunning plain wedding dresses. Jesus Peiro, Ellis Bridals, Justin Alexander Signature, and Blue by Enzoani are just a few of the names that offer exquisite designs that are anything but boring. These bridal designers focus on high-quality fabrics, expert tailoring, and subtle details that elevate plain dresses to a whole new level of sophistication.

Are Plain Wedding Dresses In?

Now that we've established that plain wedding dresses are far from boring, let's address whether they are currently in style. Spoiler alert: they absolutely are! Here's why plain wedding dresses are a hot trend in the bridal fashion world.

Trending Minimalism

Minimalism is a major trend across all aspects of fashion, and wedding dresses are no exception. Brides today are increasingly opting for clean, simple designs that reflect their modern, sophisticated tastes. A plain wedding dress embodies this minimalist aesthetic, making it a popular choice for contemporary brides.

Celebrity Influence

Celebrities and influencers have a significant impact on bridal trends. High-profile weddings featuring brides in plain, elegant gowns have set a trend that's hard to ignore. From Meghan Markle's two looks one being a simple a-line with a bateau neck and long sleeves to her slinky and sleek halterneck by Givenchy or Hailey Bieber's chic asymmetrical dress by Vera Wang and a simple Halterneck Style by Ralph and Russo, plain wedding dresses have graced the aisles of some of the most talked-about weddings in recent years.

Versatility for All Wedding Styles

Plain wedding dresses are incredibly versatile and can be styled to suit any wedding theme, from a chic city ceremony to a rustic countryside celebration. Their simplicity allows them to be dressed up or down, making them a perfect fit for various venues and settings.

Emphasis on Quality

With the focus on minimal design, the quality of the fabric and craftsmanship becomes paramount. Brides opting for plain wedding dresses often prioritize luxurious materials and impeccable tailoring. This emphasis on quality over quantity aligns with the growing trend of sustainable and mindful fashion choices.

Timeless Appeal

Trends come and go, but plain wedding dresses have a timeless appeal that transcends fashion cycles. They offer a classic look that won't date, ensuring you look back on your wedding photos with pride for years to come. The enduring elegance of a plain dress is a testament to its lasting style.

9 Reasons to Buy Your Wedding Dress at a Bridal Sample Sale

Introduction

Planning a wedding is an exciting time in any couple's life. However, it can also be a stressful period, especially when it comes to finding the perfect wedding dress. Wedding dresses are often one of the most significant expenses in a wedding budget, but there's a way to get a dream gown without breaking the bank – bridal sample sales.

In this blog, Victoria from & Wolf Bridal will explore nine compelling reasons why buying your wedding dress at a sample sale could be your best decision for your special day.

So before we start, what is a sample sale? This event is where bridal shops sell their sample dresses at discounted prices. They can last a day, three, a week or even a month. They are slightly different to buying from wedding dress shops that specialise in 'reloved' or 'used' wedding dresses as they won't have the vast array of bridal designers to choose from, but if you are in love with dresses by a particular designer such as Jesus Peiro, Susan Neville or Madi Lane going to shops that are official stockists, will give you more choice of your favourite designer often including this seasons wedding dresses.

  1. Incredible Savings

2344 by Jesus Peiro RRP £2850 by the sample for £1250

Probably the most compelling reason to consider a bridal sample sale is the incredible savings you can enjoy. Bridal shops like ours need to make space for new inventory every year, and therefore, they will hold a sale and offer their sample dresses at significantly reduced prices. These designer wedding dress discounts can be anywhere from 30% to 70% off the original price, usually depending on the season that the dress is from, allowing you to invest your saved money in other aspects of your wedding or even your honeymoon.

Fact: At & Wolf Bridal, when we hold our sample sales, our discounted wedding dresses are reduced by a minimum of 50% with savings of up to 75%.

2. Designer Dresses Within Reach

Brides worldwide dream of wearing a designer wedding dress, but the price tags are often prohibitive for many. Wedding dress sample sales, however, provide an excellent opportunity to own a designer wedding dress without the designer price tag. You might find stunning dresses from top designers that were previously beyond your budget but are now well within your reach.

3. Unique and Hard-to-Find Styles

Sample sales offer an array of unique wedding dress styles that you might not find in regular collections. Boutiques often include dresses from past seasons or discontinued lines, allowing you to stand out with a one-of-a-kind gown. If you're looking for something extraordinary and original, a sample sale is the place to find it. These gowns usually have the most considerable discount, as they can no longer be ordered.

Bridal shops usually discount these by around 70% if a gown or designer is discontinued. These dresses will usually be consigned to specialist used wedding dress shops if they don't sell during the sale, so be prepared to pay more if it turns out to be the one and you need to sleep on it.

4. Immediate Availability

If you're getting married on a tight schedule, waiting several months for a made-to-order wedding dress might not be feasible. You can walk away with your dream gown on the same day at a sample sale. With no production wait time and immediate availability of wedding dresses in the sale, you can focus on other aspects of wedding planning, knowing that your dress is already taken care of.

DId you know that Outside of a sample sale, particularly relevant if you are getting married in less than six months, & Wolf Bridal will sell any, including new dresses, off the rack at 20% off?

5. Premium Quality and Genuine Designer Dresses

While sample dresses have been tried on before, reputable boutiques maintain their gowns in top condition. Any minor wear and tear is usually repairable, but more often than not, only dry cleaning and the odd replacement button are needed. This means you can find a high-quality affordable designer wedding dress that still looks and feels brand new – at a fraction of the cost.

DID YOU KNOW? All of the dresses of a well-known chain of bridal warehouses, you know who I mean...first word rhymes with shed, are basically shop samples that dozens of brides may have tried on before you?

6. Made to Fit and an Opportunity for Customization

Inside & Wolf Bridal

Buying a sample dress doesn't mean you have to compromise on your vision. You can still personalise the dress through alterations and customisations. Skilled seamstresses will tailor the dress to your exact measurements, a part of the process that all wedding dresses will need to go through if you want them to look like a perfect fit, even ones made to order. A customised wedding dress is also an option as they can add unique touches, such as sleeves or lace, to make it yours. This way, you get the best of both worlds: a designer dress at a discounted price with the personal touch of customisation.

7. Less Stress, More Fun

When you find a dress or a designer you love, wedding dress shopping can be overwhelming and emotionally taxing, especially if the dress you love is far more expensive than what you have budgeted. When buying wedding dresses on a budget sample sales offer you the opportunity to go bridal studio shopping, have a great experience, and find the dress you have been lusting after on sale for £999 instead of £2500. You can focus on finding a gown that makes you feel beautiful and confident without worrying about the strain on your budget.

8. Eco-Friendly Wedding Dress Options

Choosing to buy a sample dress is an environmentally responsible decision. Eco-conscious wedding dress shopping means that when you purchase a floor sample, you're giving a dress a second chance to shine rather than contributing to the demand for new dresses and increased production. Reduce your carbon footprint and embrace sustainable wedding dress shopping with a sample sale purchase.

9. Support Local Bridal shops

Sample sales take place in local bridal shops. Participating in your local bridal boutique events supports small, usually women-led businesses and contributes to your local economy. These bridal shops provide personalised service, expert advice, and ongoing support on top of a unique shopping experience that larger retailers and high street shops might not offer.

Final Thoughts and some Tips for wedding dress sample shopping

From incredible savings and affordable bridal gowns to unique wedding dress finds and immediate availability, the bridal gown sample sale benefits are numerous. There can also be some downsides, but we have provided some tips and things to consider to negate this.

Sample sales can feel rushed. Many wedding dress shops will only give you an hour to look through the dresses, try them on, and decide if you want to say yes to the dress. This breaks down to about 40 minutes trying on dresses and 20 writing up the sale.

At & Wolf Bridal, we trialled running our mid-season bridal sample sale as mini appointments, and they were so successful that we decided to run all sale appointments as full consultations, giving our brides the advice and confidence to say yes to the dress.

Most shop samples will be on the smaller side, with very few sizes 16+ unless the shop carries a wide range of sizes. This can also be the case in reloved shops.

No matter how much you love the dress or that it's a steal. Don't be tempted to buy a dress that is too small, even by one size, as that is a lot of pressure to put on yourself to lose weight - 1 dress size = 15 lbs. It’s also worth remembering that the cost of letting a dress out could cancel all your savings.

Bridal shops don’t tend to hold dresses if you need to bring someone else along or want to think about it, so it can feel very pressurised as once a sample has been sold, it is usually gone for good.

Before attending a bridal sample sale, try on some wedding dresses, especially if the sale appointment is only an hour long. This way, you will have an idea of what you are looking for.

Don’t attend a wedding dress sample sale without everyone you need to be with you to say yes. This can be difficult if the sale is only for a few days, so if they can’t be with you, see if you can video call them.

This final tip is relevant for every appointment; go in with the mindset of ‘I may find my dress today’. This will help your fight and flight response by engaging with your subconsciousness that you are open to finding a wedding dress.

A warm welcome awaits every & Wolf Bride

Conclusion

Finding the perfect wedding dress is essential to creating your dream wedding day look. Even without being on a tight budget, it can be a daunting task. Shopping at a sample sale can make the process much more enjoyable. Don't miss the chance to own a high-quality, stunning gown that fits your budget while making an eco-friendly and community-minded choice.

Book in with & Wolf Bridal or head to your local bridal boutique during the next sample sale event, and you might just find the dress of your dreams.

Happy shopping!

With our guidance, we'll ensure that your quest for the best wedding suppliers is as smooth as silk. So, let's dive in and make this planning process a breeze, all while creating a wedding day that will leave you and your guests in awe.

Expert Recommendations for Unveiling Your Dream Team:

Ready to discover some hidden gems for your wedding? Take note of these tried-and-true tips from seasoned wedding planners and industry experts

Tap into the Grapevine:

When it comes to finding outstanding suppliers, word-of-mouth recommendations are like a golden ticket. Reach out to trusted friends, family members, and anyone recently married or involved in a bridal party. Their firsthand experiences can lead you to suppliers who possess that extra sprinkle of magic you're seeking. This organic approach to finding suppliers not only helps you find trusted professionals but also improves your chances of discovering hidden gems in the wedding industry.

Swipe Right on Social Media:

Social media isn't just a place for funny cat videos—it's a treasure trove of wedding inspiration and supplier discoveries. Follow wedding accounts, dive into relevant hashtags, and initiate friendly conversations (without being too creepy, of course). Look for suppliers who have impressive skills and showcase their personalities online. You want someone who feels like a friend, not just another business transaction. By engaging with suppliers on social media, you can get a glimpse of their work, read reviews, and even connect with past clients to gain insights into their experience. This online approach allows you to widen your search and explore a diverse range of wedding suppliers, increasing your chances of finding the perfect fit for your wedding.

Seek out the Supplier Matchmakers:

Did you know that some generous souls have already done the hard work of supplier matchmaking for you? These wedding-related online communities, bridal blogs, and forums are the fairy godmothers of the wedding world. Take advantage of their knowledge and let them sprinkle a little supplier magic on your special day. These platforms often curate lists of recommended suppliers, providing valuable insights and recommendations based on their expertise. By leveraging these resources, you can save time and effort in your search for the ideal suppliers, as these matchmakers have already done the groundwork for you.

The secret Weapon

You're planning your dream wedding, and you want nothing but the best for your special day. That's where the wedding planner swoops in, armed with the ability to connect you with the crème de la crème of suppliers and offer on-the-day support. Trust us when we say hiring a wedding planner can be a game-changer! These superheroes of the wedding world have the inside scoop, extensive networks, and a ton of know-how to help you find the perfect suppliers. With their expertise and guidance, they can assist you in finding suppliers that align with your style, budget, and vision. Additionally, wedding planners can offer valuable on-the-day support, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and seamlessly. By enlisting the help of a wedding planner, you can streamline the supplier selection process, alleviate stress, and enjoy a truly unforgettable wedding day experience.

Red Flags to Dodge Like a Pro:

Now, let's shed some light on those red flags that you should be wary of like a seasoned wedding pro. Keep an eye out for these warning signs as you search for your dream suppliers

Slow or No Communication:

In this fast-paced 21st century, prompt and reliable communication is crucial. If a supplier takes ages to respond to your initial enquiries or prefers archaic methods like carrier pigeons, it's time to sprint in the opposite direction. You don't want to be a bridezilla on a mission to track down elusive suppliers. Seek out professionals who understand the value of quick and efficient communication, but a word of caution during peak wedding season; even the best suppliers may take a little longer to get back to you. Patience is key.

The Mysterious Ghost of Reviews Past:

Imagine researching a supplier only to find their online presence resembling an abandoned dance floor during a slow song—no reviews, no website, no social media—nothing! It's as if they're hiding in the shadows. Run away faster than Cinderella at midnight! You want suppliers who have earned the trust and admiration of real people through their exceptional work. Don't settle for a mystery act that leaves you wondering, "Who let the dogs out?"

The Nonchalant Pro:

Picture this: you're pouring your heart out about your wedding dreams, and the supplier responds with the enthusiasm of a snail on a lazy Sunday. Yikes! You deserve someone who matches your excitement, pays attention to your vision, and genuinely cares about making your day extraordinary. If a supplier appears disinterested or lacks passion, it's time to gracefully move on. Your wedding is the grandest party of the century, and you deserve a team that treats it with the same level of enthusiasm and importance. Trust your gut and find suppliers who share your excitement and dedication to creating a truly memorable day.

Organic vs Paid for Advertising, Red Flags to look out for like Vogue Says 'I Do' Advertising Feature,

In the top Right Hand corner it says ‘Vogue Advertising Feature’

fancy magazine features

Oh, another red flag to watch: suppliers who proudly claim to have been featured in fancy magazines like Vogue. Don't get us wrong, being featured in prestigious publications can be a mark of recognition and quality, but here's the catch it's important to distinguish between organic features and paid advertisements; if a supplier paid big bucks for that feature, it might raise some eyebrows. After all, anyone can buy ad space, whether they can deliver top-notch services or not. So, be a savvy couple and dig deeper. Look for suppliers who have earned their stripes through genuine talent, outstanding customer service, and glowing reviews from real couples. After all, you want suppliers who are the real deal, not just riding on the coattails of a pricey magazine ad

Final Thoughts:

Listen to the grapevine, swipe right on social media, and seek out those supplier matchmakers who have your back. And, of course, avoid those red flags like a pro, i.e. poor communication, the mysterious ghost of reviews past, the nonchalant pro, and the flashy paid-for ad features. With some planning and a sense of humour, you'll assemble a dream team of suppliers who will bring your wedding vision to life. So, go forth, future newlyweds, and may your journey be filled with laughter, joy, and a happily ever after that's as epic as a rom-com finale!

If you have answered yes to any of these questions or want to know what will happen during your appointment with us, read on.

As you begin your search for the dress of your dreams, you might have a plethora of questions in mind. Fear not; we've compiled a comprehensive list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and provided detailed answers to ensure your bridal experience with & Wolf is seamless and enjoyable. Let's dive in!

When should I book an appointment with & Wolf Bridal?

As soon as you are ready to say yes, then thats the time to book your bridal appointments. As a minimum, all we ask of our lovely nearly weds is that they have secured their venue, which will greatly influence the wedding dress you choose. For example, a wedding at Elmore Court in Gloucestershire may require a different style of wedding dress to a Chalk Barn in Wiltshire wedding.

In terms of timing, the perfect time to shop for your bridal gown is 12-15 months before the big day. This allows you enough time to visit 1 or 2 shops, say yes, wait for the dress to arrive and get your bridal alterations done without any stress or risk of dress regret.

& Wolf Bridal loves a little bit of cheesiness

Do I need an appointment at & Wolf Bridal?

Yes, at & Wolf Bridal, we open by 'Appointment Only'. You will exclusively use the bridal boutique; We want to ensure you receive personalised attention. So it will be just you and your loved ones.

Do you charge for appointments?

Yes, we do. There is a £25 first bridal consultation fee for ALL appointments. This is redeemed against any wedding dress purchase made at that first consultation. Inside & Wolf Bridal, our beautiful bridal boutique is based in a listed building on Marlborough High Street, in Wiltshire

& Wolf Bridal is in a Grade 2 Listed Building in Marlborough, Wiltshire

How long does a bridal appointment usually last?

To ensure an unhurried and enjoyable experience, our bridal appointments last 90 minutes. This duration allows ample time for you to try on various gowns, ask questions, and make an informed decision so you can confidently say yes to the dress.

What sizes are available at & Wolf Bridal?

At & Wolf Bridal, our wedding dress samples are in sizes 8 to 18, but we can order up to a UK28.

At & Wolf Bridal, we strongly believe that every bride should feel beautiful and self-assured on her big day. We acknowledge that we need to enhance our product range to ensure greater size inclusivity. Therefore, starting with our purchases for 2024, we have committed to dedicating one-third of all sample orders for brides to try on to sizes 16 and above.

Can I bring guests to my appointment?

Absolutely! We encourage you to bring your loved ones and make your bridal appointment a memorable experience. However, to ensure a relaxed environment and provide personalised attention, we limit this to just three guests, with no exceptions, as our viewing area is compact and bijou. It is also worth remembering that sometimes, too many opinions can be overwhelming, so it's essential to strike a balance between your own preferences and the input of your trusted confidants. We genuinely find our brides have the best experience if it is just them, mum and one other.

Can I take photos during my appointment?

We understand that capturing the moments of trying on wedding dresses is essential for many brides. However, the best way to judge whether the wedding dress you are trying on is the one is the way that dress makes you feel, not the way you look in a crappy photo taken on a mobile phone, in a dress that doesn't fit, without the correct underwear, unstyled hair and no makeup. Pair that with poor lighting, and the dress that made you and everyone else cry doesn't stand a chance when you pour over the photos later on.

Having said all of that, we allow photos at the end of 'the one' or the 'I think it’s the one'.

A little slice of bridal boutique heaven at & Wolf Bridal in Marlborough

What is the price range of wedding dresses at & Wolf Bridal?

Our wedding dress collections starts from £1,500, and prices may vary depending on the specific design, fabric, embellishments, and customisation options, but they go up to £4000. During your appointment, your stylist will guide you through the options and ensure you find a dress matching your budget and vision. Our wedding dress samples have the price inside them, and there is a price guide for all our designers on our website.

How far in advance should I order my wedding dress?

We recommend ordering your designer wedding dress at the latest 9 months before your wedding day, but ideally around 11-14 months. This allows ample time for production, delivery and alterations. However, if you have a shorter timeline, don't worry! We offer a selection of ready-to-wear wedding dresses and short-order bridal gowns from our bridal designers.

Based on this information, we will guide you through our stunning collection of wedding dresses, helping you find the perfect match.

I will explain everything on the rails and leave you to pick a few, and I will fill in any gaps of styles I think you are missing, and whilst you are looking, I will pop off and make some drinks for everyone. Once we understand what you are loving and not loving as much, we will narrow the search to find the one.

You will have time to try on between 4 & 7 bridal gowns, and in the last 30 minutes, we will use that time to try the favourite back on, take some snaps, and we will either write the details down for you to take away and think about or we take your measurements and place the order for your wedding dress. Finding the One in Reflection

It may take a moment of stillness and reflection for the significance of this is my wedding dress to sink in. Standing in front of the mirror, taking a deep breath, and envisioning how you'll look on your special day can be a quiet and introspective experience that suddenly makes you know deep down that this gown is the one. The absence of tears doesn't diminish the importance of this moment; rather, it highlights the personal nature of your connection with the right wedding dress.

Celebrating Your Wedding Dress Journey

On the other hand, some brides to be do cry or have those big, bold, and triumphant moments of excitement while shopping for their wedding dress. They may jump for joy, dance around the shop, or even burst into song. If that's your style, embrace it! Your wedding dress shopping experience should reflect your personality and individuality. Don't be afraid to let loose and celebrate in whatever way feels natural. After all, it's your moment and should be filled with joy and authenticity.

Honouring Your Instincts when you do find your bridal gown

When shopping for a wedding dress, listening to your instincts is key. Trust your inner voice, and allow yourself to experience the emotions that arise during the bridal appointment process. Whether you feel a deep sense of calm that you have found your wedding gown or an overwhelming burst of happiness, or even tears, it's important to acknowledge and honour your feelings. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to feel when you find the perfect dress. What matters most is how the dress makes you feel and the confidence it inspires in you, as it is remarkable how a simple piece of fabric can evoke such strong emotions. So it must be truly exceptional.

Beyond the Television Screen

While shows like "Say Yes to the Dress" can certainly be entertaining, it's crucial to separate the television fantasy from your reality. These programs are edited and curated to create dramatic narratives, focusing on tearful moments and emotional outbursts. However, real life is not scripted, and your wedding dress-shopping experience will be unique to you. Avoid comparing yourself to the heightened emotions portrayed on screen, and instead, embrace the authenticity of your own journey.

Support and Empowerment

It's important to remember that searching for the perfect wedding dress should be a pleasurable and empowering experience. Attending every bridal appointment with the, ‘I may find my dress in here, so I am ready to say yes to my wedding dress’ frame of my mind will help, and having a supportive group of loved ones who appreciate and accept your uniqueness with you, will make visiting bridal boutiques even easier. Everyone will attend your bridal appointment with their agenda, preferences, and tastes. But if you pick the right cheerleaders, they will support you when you find your perfect bridal gown, whether in shop number 1 or 10 (if it is shop number 10, then we need to talk).

It’s also especially important to find bridal boutiques with bridal stylists like ourselves who will respect your choices and actively listen to your wants and needs. Our knowledge and advice can be extremely helpful in guiding you through the journey without feeling overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations. Our role is not to tell you that it’s the dress and you should buy it; instead, our role is to empower and guide you to feel confident and happy in making your decision.

And Finally

Ladies, it's time to reclaim the narrative of wedding dress shopping. Don't let shows like "Say Yes to the Dress" or any other media representation dictate how you should feel during this special journey. Your emotions are valid, whether quiet and reflective or exuberant and boisterous. Embrace your instincts, celebrate in your own way, and remember that finding the perfect dress is about how it makes you feel. So, go forth and find the gown that will make you shine on your wedding day, confident in the knowledge that your experience is uniquely yours. Say yes to embracing your true self and to the dress that speaks to your heart!

Everything you need to know before your Bridal Appointment

Help, I’m going wedding dress shopping soon, what do I need to know?

At & Wolf Bridal Studio HQ, this question is often asked across social media. Though often well-intentioned, the advice isn’t always that accurate as it’s not coming from a bridal boutique. Everyone can speak from experience and offer their opinion, but read on for what you need to know; after all, we are the experts at bridal styling.

Before you do anything, It’s time to turn to the ‘Gram’ or Pinterest.

Our very first piece of advice is to do your research. Look for dresses you like, find out who the designer is, and the price range for that designer. If it is around your budget, then look for stockists nearby.

Appointments.

Check out bridal shops’ web pages and only visit bridal boutiques that carry your favourite designers. Trust me; you will get dress blind before you have even started; just because Aunty Flo says you should visit the shop your cousin got her dress from doesn’t mean you have to.

Find your top 3 places and book your appointments with them. You may have to travel and likely have to pay for your appointment, as many bridal boutiques now charge, especially those like us that stock premium designers. This is a different blog that you can also read on our website.

When to go shopping

When you visit a bridal store, you should be ready to say yes, whether it’s your first or last shop. Ideally, book your appointments 10-12 months before your wedding day; this will give you plenty of time to visit 1-3 shops, do any revisits and place your order.

Shopping less than seven months before your wedding is a rush, and ordering with less than 26 weeks till your wedding day will likely incur a 10-20% rush order fee that the designer sets.

If you must visit a few shops, don’t see more than two bridal shops in one day. Shopping for wedding dresses can be tiring, and you may get hangry, so make sure you build in time for lunch.

If you haven’t found the one by shop number 3, take a few weeks to break, clear your mind and refocus on what you want. The dresses are not going anywhere.

Don’t be afraid to return to a shop you have already been to, not try on your favourite but a fresh new appointment. If they have had the dress closest to your dream dress, it may be there; you just didn’t get to try it on.

Girls often come back to us because they know the dress is with us. Even I went back to the first shop I visited as they were the closest, and I found the one on my second appointment with them.

Most bridal shops that carry the designer you love will carry other designers that complement each other. This means that if the chosen designer isn’t quite hitting the mark, they will have other dresses that may be more than perfect for you. Just keep an open mind.

At & Wolf Bridal, we have a carefully curated selection of bridal designers that have been chosen because they work well together. For example, Jesus Peiro's wedding dresses are minimalist and clean, with unfussy lines, plain fabrics and structure. Yet, we also stock Enzoani, which are lacey, fitted, glitzy, and, dare we say it, a little sexier.

Shopping for your wedding dress should be entertaining, but it’s not a TV Show.

When it comes to deciding how many people to take with you to find your wedding gown, less really is more. Just because your chosen boutique may let you bring 5 people doesn’t mean you should.

At & Wolf Bridal Studio, we allow a maximum of three guests. This is because our viewing area is small, and we offer a calm and relaxed appointment that will enable YOU to focus on yourself and what YOU want.

Remember that choosing your wedding dress is all about you. When you bring too many people, not only do you have to listen to all of their conflicting opinions, but all too often, it becomes about them and what they would/would not wear. Hey, it’s a bridal shop full of pretty things, so they can be forgiven, but remember this appointment is about you and not entertaining your tribe.

Is Everyone on the Same Page?

This is so important! Before you go dress shopping, make sure that everyone is on the same page as you. If they aren’t, leave that at home and don’t give them the option to provide an opinion.

If you think super sexy strapless Pnina Tornai style and your mum / MIL / Granny says you should wear something completely covered, traditional Kate Middleton style, they will never like what you like. They will also be honest with you and give you their opinion; after all, it’s why you brought them in the first place.

If you need their approval before saying yes and purchasing, leave them at home until you find the ‘one’, and book a retrial to ‘show’ them the dress you have chosen. When you love it and are talking about the dress as if it’s yours, and you are not asking them for an opinion, 99.9% of the time, they will love it because they will see how happy you are about it.

If you can’t get them on the same page, inform your consultant before the appointment. We can then do a mum’s pick and talk about why it’s every shade wrong for you. Be warned, though, this has often backfired, and we have to admit that mum was right all along!

Who should you bring

A little caveat to the above, if there is someone that you can’t say yes to the dress without them, you need to bring them to EVERY appointment. If you find the ‘one’ and get emotional, or teary-eyed or super excited that it’s the one, you probably won’t get that same rush of emotions the next time you try it on. It doesn’t mean it’s not the one, but you’ve already had your moment.

You don’t need special knickers.

We see many posts about what underwear to wear, and every bridal shop is different. We don’t care what colour your knickers are. If you can wear nude awesome, but genuinely please wear some!

This is a whole different game when it comes to bras. If your girls stand up front and centre and are not fighting gravity, you don’t need to wear a bra to try on dresses. But if gravity is starting to win, if they are a bit jiggly, wear a bra, and even more controversial, at & Wolf Bridal, we ask our brides to wear one with straps. These can be slipped off the shoulders if on show, but strapless bras are rubbish at supporting and giving a good shape unless you have had the help of a bra fitter who has sized you properly.

 We’ve seen it all before.

There is no judgement here. We think every body is beautiful, and I know it’s easy to say try not to worry about it, whether it’s scarring, acne, cellulite, wonky boobs and mum bods; we genuinely have seen it all before. At & Wolf Bridal, we will help you in and out of dresses but will do our very best to make sure that you are not left feeling uncomfortable or exposed.

& Wolf Bridal Studio decor

Talking of pinning, be prepared that the dresses will not fit you.

Wedding dresses are for giants or at least women that are 5ft9, so they will always be too long.

It’s also doubtful that all or even any of the samples you try on will fit you, but we can work our magic to either pull or pin the dress to show you how it will look.

Most shops only carry one of each sample, and these can fit on a human body in 2 – 3 sizes each way. Our sizing is from a UK 8 to a UK 16, with most sizes being 10,12 and 14.

Don’t expect tears.

When you find your dream wedding dress, don’t expect to cry or even feel an overwhelming sense of emotion. If you are not a crier or someone who gets emotional, it’s doubtful that you will tear up. The same goes for your mum or anyone else in your bride tribe. Self-doubt is awful; people question themselves because they aren’t emotional about the purchase. Still, it’s infrequent for people to cry. I know we see it on TV programmes like Say Yes to the Dress, but remember these are TV programmes, and they keep rolling the film until they get the reaction they want, the bride, the mum, the whole gang sobbing the truth is after 8 hours trying on five dresses you would be crying too.

If you say anything along the lines of ‘I love it’, ‘I wouldn’t change a thing,’ ‘It’s just what I imagined’, ‘I feel like me’, ‘this is so me’, ‘it’s perfect’, ‘I can see myself getting married in this’ then you have probably found your dress. These are much better indicators that it’s actually the one than tears.

We see more tears on the actual day or when your dress has finally arrived and you try it on for the first time.

This is going to hurt.

Okay, not physically, but it is a hefty blow to the old bank balance, as most places require a minimum 50% payment to order.

Wedding dresses are not cheap. Okay, yes, you can get inexpensive dresses, but you get what you pay for; a dress from ASOS or Wed2B for £100 is not going to be the same quality as one that is £500, and that won’t be the same quality as one that is £1000.

Before you go shopping, make sure you know your budget, and make sure you include alterations (budget £300+) veils, shoes and accessories in this.

Good reputable bridal boutiques will have a price range on their website, so you know what to expect. We are entirely open about our pricing. Our bridal gowns start at £1500 up to £3500, with the majority costing around £2200. We will ask you what your budget is. While we wouldn’t stop you from trying on any gown you wanted, we want to help you stick to your budget for our picks.

Brides on a budget

While discussing budgets, if you are on a tight one before you head off to Wed2B, check out your local bridal shop to see what sample sales they have or if they have an Off the Rack policy. Sometimes it seems that there is a stigma to buying in this way, and brides on a budget always recommend W2B first when someone asks where to go, but there is no shame in buying your dress this way, and it means that you can grab yourself an incredible genuine designer bargain. Remember that the dresses from W2B are no different from any other dress sample you will try on. They are not new and will have been tried on in the store by countless other brides before you.

If you are on a budget, then & Wolf Bridal has a couple of ways to purchase one of our designer samples.

Sample Sales

We hold two main sample sales a year, a 4-day sale from Wednesday to Saturday on Easter weekend, and then a month-long sample sale over August, where we discount almost every dress between 50 and 80%. The only dresses that won’t be in the sale are those we have had for less than six months.

If you want to know when our Sales are sign up to our mailing list here

Off the Rack.

The sample’s age will depend on the off the rack saving, we have set prices as follows:

New - RRP / 6 months to 1 Year – 10%, / 1 -3 Years 25% / 3+ Years 50%

We love selling off the rack, even our new dresses, because we constantly lust after the latest designs, which helps us make room for new gowns. So don’t be afraid to ask.

Bridal gifts. The One Candle

Enjoy the process but for the love of God, stop looking.

You have found the one you love, mum loves it, MOH loves it, and then this little voice pipes up and says, but you haven’t visited anywhere else.

But when you say yes to the dress, stop looking, and stop comparing, as you will always find something better if you keep looking; the odds are stacked against you, as there are 270,000 different wedding dresses out there to buy today. But it does not mean you have made the wrong choice if you listened to your gut, not your head.

How to Have a Greener Wedding

Planning weddings nowadays can have a significant impact on our planet. In this blog, we have gathered our favorite eco-friendly and sustainable suppliers, and we also provide top tips on how to have an environmentally conscious wedding.

Ditch the destination wedding for one that is local.

Okay this may seem really obvious, but we all know that flying has a huge impact on the environment. The miles covered by everyone getting to and from the airport and then flying is one hell of a lot of CO2 emissions. Look for local venues where people can stay over and where possible walk from ceremony to reception

Did you Know 15 people flying from Birmingham Airport to a wedding in Santorini creates 14.6 Tons of CO2

Check what your venue’s green policy is.

Does it use sustainable energy, does it create it’s own energy. Do they have recycling bins on site. We all know that single use plastics are a big no, no. A good place to get a feel is when viewing the venue is to check out the bar area, are they still using plastic straws or single use plastic glasses for outdoor drinks. Ask if they have an environmental policy and do they ask their preferred suppliers to sign up to their green policy.

Vaughn’s Kitchen, Devizes

Vaughn’s Kitchen, Devizes

Plan you menu carefully with your caterer.

Opt for food that is seasonal, organic, uses fair trade and higher welfare ingredients. If you can do all four then that is even better. Another sustainable movement that looks like it is here to stay is Vegetarian and Vegan diets, many people have gone meat free not just because of animal welfare but because of the aggressive farming tactics that are used in the production of meat.

Also think about how your food is being served, feel confident in saying no to plastic cutlery, paper and polystyrene plates. These single use items are bad for the earth and can’t be recycled. If it has to be disposable, ask your caterer to use Bamboo or compostable plates and cutlery.

"Naturally Balanced is our fundamental philosophy. Whether it's catering for a special event or a Cookery School Masterclass, our passion for using good ingredients in the right balance is paramount." Peter Vaughan

Foam free and Seasonal Flowers

Look for florists that actively promote that they are foam free. After your wedding and the flowers have died the plastic foam cannot be recycled as florist foam is a single use plastic.

Choosing seasonal flowers means that many are grown within the UK, cuts down on air miles. I think we all know how beautiful peonies are but they have a really short season of about 6-8 weeks from May to July, they are available out of season but at a huge cost not only in price as you can be paying upwards of £12 a stem, but the impact on the environment as they will be forced in a green house and then flown to the UK.

Think about Transport

Can guests get to your venue by public transport? If so encourage guests to use it, by including details with your invites. Alternatively if you have a lot of guests coming from one location consider providing a coach or mini bus that can pick everyone up from a central location. It’s a great way to get the party going and you can also get some lovely snaps of the two of you together inside and out.

Hire or Use Second Hand Décor

Don’t buy props and décor new. Buying new often comes at a considerable expense, there is always a risk of buying to much or not enough, then having to mix and match or even changing your mind on theme and colour scheme. You also need to factor in the time and energy sourcing products, setting up and taking down after your special day, which is a lot more than you think.

If you can’t hire, then look at buying second hand rather than new. Wedding groups on Facebook are usually a good way to find things; a good one in particular is Buy My Wedding. Once you have had your day re-list them and keep the joy going.

Bridal Styling - Jewellery, The Finishing Touch

No matter what your style is, be it traditional, modern minimal, or bohemian, there is a piece of jewellery that will complement your wedding dress perfectly. The key is to consider the neckline of your dress when choosing accessories. By selecting the right pieces, your bridal look will come together seamlessly.

Jewellery is a personal thing, some like bling, some like chunky, some like simple, and bridal jewellery is no different. So finding the best bridal jewellery to go with your wedding gown can feel daunting. Your accessories should complement and flatter your dress without stealing the show.

Strapless

A strapless gown provides the opportunity to be flamboyant and glamorous. It elongates the neck — and shows off a fabulous piece of jewellery! If your shoulders or collarbones are your favourite features, a strapless dress will frame them perfectly.

Necklines on strapless dresses tend to be either sweetheart (read on my friend, as we cover that next) or a straight neckline. The super stylish straight neckline on a strapless bridal gown goes well with a variety of different styles. Consider wearing a shorter necklace, for example, either a choker or collar length both are very flattering. For a simple, elegant look, consider a simple strand of pearls (your something borrowed, perhaps?).

The Sweetheart

Just like its name, the sweetheart is shaped like the top of the heart. This is a popular choice for brides because it flatters practically every body type.

A good choice is a simple pendant matched with a pair of stud earrings. There are many bridal sets around that will give you a coordinated look and are definitely something worth considering.

TOP TIP: For both these styles if you don’t want to wear a necklace, find a pair of statement earrings that speak to you. Add sparkle with long diamond earrings, or if you’re a minimalist, look for an interesting geometric shape.

High Neck, Halter or Bateau

With any high necked dress, you need to keep it simple. We recommend skipping the necklace altogether and instead opt for statement earrings, choose something that compliments your dress. A pair of timeless sapphire earrings could be your something blue but don’t be afraid to go bold with a pair of chandelier earrings instead.

If you have your heart set on a necklace, go for something small such as a single diamond.

Jewellery+for+a+deep+V+dress.jpg

The V-Neck

You can style a v-neck bridal gown in so many different ways, dependent on the depth of the V.

For a deep V shape, think statement earrings or if a big bold earrings are not your thing, then go for either a choker or a lariat. Anything else such as a pendant will act as an arrow drawing peoples eyes to your breasts.

A more demure V that provides coverage works well with a short pendant that finishes 2 - 3 inches above the point of the V.

For both these styles, if you have an open back we recommend a ‘back necklace’ which will look fabulous.

Asymmetric (One Shoulder)

Since the neckline is the focal point, forget a necklace as it will take away from the drama and look unbalanced. Accessorise with simple, yet elegant earrings and add balance with a bangle or bracelet

Illusion wedding dress with simple earrings

Illusion

Our suggestion with this is to keep your accessories simple, especially since the fabric used for this neckline is usually quite delicate and easy to snag. If you want to wear a necklace, try a simple pendant style. For earrings, we like a classic diamond stud. Leave the embellishment to your dress!

Tying it all together

So we have focused mainly on necklaces and earrings and haven’t really touched on tiaras, hair combs or vines, headbands or veils. However, we would like to leave you with a few top tips.

1.     Match your bridal jewellery to your dress, and not your wedding or engagement ring. Your dress is the statement piece so don’t worry about mixing metals, no one will notice if your rings are platinum, but your dress is a creamy ivory, maybe plump for more flattering gold tones. If your dress is off white, then silver tones work really well.

2.     You are not a Christmas tree, so go easy on the bling and the baubles. Consider wearing no more than 3 accessories and certainly no more than 4 (and yes we include belts in this). If you have a statement necklace, statement earrings (anything bigger than a 1p coin), skip the tiara or any hairpiece that comes around the front of your face. Instead, opt for a comb or pins in the back.

3.     Look at the overall shapes and stones. Are they ovals, pearls? Are the details spiky or floral? Your jewellery and hairpieces should complement each other, but they don’t have to be an exact match.

Living Sustainably? You can Still Have your dream dress!

With studies saying that 77% of people are wanting, and trying to be more sustainable, saying “Yes” to your dream wedding dress does not mean having to turn your back on your eco and ethical principles.

We have been living in a society for far to long where you can buy a T-shirt for less than a sandwich, where we are buying items of clothing to just wear once. Sustainable fashion is based on wearing your clothes over and over again  - at least 30 times - and investing in timeless pieces that will form a staple part of your wardrobe.

Sustainable living and dream wedding dresses

It takes 2700 litres of water to make 1 t-shirt

It takes 2700 litres of water to make 1 t-shirt

Being aware of all of this, it probably feels that finding a sustainable wedding dress isn’t actually achievable. Especially if you have gone as far as ensuring your day is plastic free, that the food is organic, your guests have been transported en masse rather than use cars, you have booked your honeymoon at an eco resort and have off set the carbon on the flights. It then seems counter productive not to buy your wedding dress with the same care and consideration. Finally to add to the unsustainable wear it once nature of wedding dresses the fabrics used in the dress pose as many if not more problems for those wanting to consider the environment.

Dependent on what article you are reading, some say the cost of weddings has been raised, some say they have reduced. In 2017 it was reported in one article that the average cost of a wedding dress has dropped to just £832 down from £1132 (remember this is just an average), at the same time big warehouse bridal stores with their mass produced fast fashion with prices from £99 - £699 had appeared on the high street, and online retailers started providing their own lines of bridal wear. Using statements such as designed in the UK and British design teams falsely leading people into thinking that they are also made in the UK. With their huge buying power they are able to leverage economies of scale by buying in bulk, reducing the cost to the consumer but not the impact on the planet.

With fast, cheap fashion, someone, somewhere is paying.

With fast, cheap fashion, someone, somewhere is paying.

Sustainability and ethical practices are really important for me not just as an individual but also for our business. We open only by appointment, so we are not making unnecessary journeys or using electricity when we don’t need to. Our gift bags are paper and we don’t use unnecessary plastic bags to store dresses in. With over 50% of our products are handmade in the UK, with a lower carbon footprint and we feel that we are beginning to lead the way in offering sustainable bridal wear to everyone.

We are proud stockists of UK Designers - Rolling in Roses and Jessica Turner Designs. I am delighted to be able to work with people whose own beliefs match my own. Both Jess and Hayley operate ethically in the UK, hand making all of their gowns on a small scale offering high quality dresses with the ability to make adaptations to their designs to enable your dress to be as unique as you.

They use fabrics that are not only sustainable, but have also been ethically produced. With fabric options that include organic plant based fabrics such as bamboo, cotton and Tencel to natural luxury fibres such as silk and peace silk.

In January 20 we were also thrilled to announce that another of our designers Jesus Peiro had introduced a new Eco fabric to their current collection. The introduction a Mikado taffeta made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles for me is a game changer, as every dress at Jesus Peiro is truly made to order and the material for each dress is cut by hand.  Meaning that brides can choose to have almost any of their dresses in this eco fabric.

Many brides still choose to keep their dresses as a memory of their special day and to share with future generations; another growing trend is a ‘trash the dress’ photo shoot. Giving the dress a second but ultimately final outing. But why stop there?

With more and more brides choosing to shop sustainably, many brides are now choosing dresses or separates that can be worn time and time again. Or are choosing dresses that with some simple alterations, or completely up cycling the fabric they can create christening gowns, tops, skirts and dresses, so that many more memories can be made for years to come.

Ultimately, we accept that the only way to purchase a truly green and sustainable wedding dress is not to buy new, and instead go with vintage or second hand. We are always happy to sell our samples of the rail, so whilst not NEW new, they are still practically perfect and have only ever been tried on in the boutique. However, we also accept that for many brides to be that this is not an option that they want to explore, many want to be the first person to wear their dress. So we will continue as one of Wiltshire’s leading sustainable bridal retailers, to offer a products and services that help brides who don’t want their wedding to literally ‘cost the earth’.

Why do bridal boutiques charge for appointments

Okay, let’s get straight down to the nitty gritty, I am going to talk about money. I get that we’re British, that it’s generally uncomfortable and I know that for some it’s a sensitive subject.

But, I also know that brides to be not only wonder why do bridal boutiques charge for appointments but actually balk or flat out refuse to pay for these.

Okay, let’s get straight down to the nitty-gritty. I am going to talk about money. I get that we’re British, that it’s generally uncomfortable, and I know that for some, it’s a sensitive subject.

But I also know that brides to be not only wonder why some bridal boutiques charge for appointments but actually baulk or flat out refuse to pay for these.

At & Wolf, we started offering free 90 minutes appointments, but in November 2019, we decided it was time to introduce an appointment fee.

Award-winning-luxury-bridal-boutique-swindon-wiltshire-willoughby-&-wolf.jpg

Why? Because bridal boutiques do not operate like other shops. Unlike high street shops, there is no popping in and out or nipping into the changing room and asking a very busy but disinterested store assistant if it’s okay to try on a pair of jeans or battling to find your size in what sometimes feels like a bit of a jumble sale.

During your appointment, you get exclusive use of the boutique, yes, that’s right, the WHOLE boutique for just you and your group of friends and loved ones. You get refreshments and a personal stylist who will give you one-to-one attention and help you find the MOST IMPORTANT dress you will ever wear (and no, it’s NOT just a dress, it’s your wedding dress).

In early 2019 we introduced an online booking system that sends out a reminder that you have an appointment, with an option to cancel or rebook 48 hours in advance. But as much as we'd all like to believe that people would cancel an appointment or let us know they no longer need it, many don't. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have driven to work, got the boutique nice and toasty and fresh nibbles in just for a bride not to turn up.

Other times we have chatted with brides to be, to get to know what it is that they want, and they tell us one of the following:

·      I’m not buying today.

·      I want to find my style, as I think I will buy online (another blog post all of its own).

·      I want to find my style here because I have a paid appointment at X, and I don’t want to waste their time – yes, this happened several times.

·      We already have a dress, but family/friends are in town

You may want to shop around; I have already stated that this is probably the most important dress you will ever buy, and completely understandable. But our shop rent, and all the associated bills, our designers and our staff need to be paid regardless, therefore going into an independent bridal boutique without the intention of buying or being ready to buy means our business has just made a loss.

I have to say that charging for appointments wasn't the route we wanted to go down, but it does mean we can ensure our time is paid for and some of the very basic costs of running a business are covered.

We don’t feel that it is unreasonable to charge £25 for appointments; you get a 90-minute private appointment with undivided attention, assistance, and advice. (Plus, it is still cheaper, lasts longer and is probably more satisfying than a dental check-up). The £25 fee that we charge is redeemable against purchases made on the day of the appointment, and if you want to go away and think about our retrials are free.

Bridal Styling - What you need to know

Your wedding dress may be the most important piece of clothing that you will ever wear; nonetheless, to achieve the perfect finish, you will no doubt choose some carefully selected accessories. At & Wolf, we ADORE headpieces and jewellery and gorgeous shoes and love nothing more than helping you complete your look.

There is an abundance of different accessories available to buy today, from buying online to having a styling appointment where you can try accessories on with your dress. So, if you’re wondering what you need to know about bridal accessories, read on…

The first and most important thing to know is that the perfect combination of accessories not only flatters your dress but are also what suits you. Accessories give you the chance to create your own individual look, whether it with a bold statement headpiece or a pair of classic pearl earrings. The choice is yours, and whatever that is, we can help you achieve it.

The first place to start is your feet, the right shoes are pretty important, and whilst we don’t stock shoes, we thought we should mention them. Some brides will dream of Choos and others dream of Converse, but on your wedding day, the most important thing is that they are comfortable. You don’t want to hobble around your reception or go on honeymoon with blisters. Your wedding shoes should be chosen with your head, not just your heart. There are so many fabulous shoes around that vary hugely in price; it really is down to personal style and budget.

Top Tip: Spend time practising walking around the house to ensure that you can walk confidently in them so that you don’t teeter down the aisle. We recommend that you wear your shoes around the house with some socks to break them in, and if you are having a first dance, wear them to practice in as this will give you some extra practice at walking and dancing in them.

So now we have covered shoes, let’s talk about veils and belts. The simplest of wedding dresses can be completely transformed with the addition of a veil or belt. We carry a small selection of bridal belts, which can be used to add sparkle or define waists, these are so versatile and can take a dress from ‘I like it a lot’ to ‘I’m saying yes to this dress’. We also offer a simple collection of UK handmade veils; we have one in every length and ribbon edge, lace-edged and ones with sparkle. There is something truly magical when a bride tries on a veil for the first time and realises that she is getting married.

We then have carefully selected our accessories to suit all tastes and budgets. Our collections are all made in the UK, and we are proud to support small businesses. Our range of accessories includes exquisite, handcrafted artisan pieces by Miss Clemmie. Genuine heirloom pieces, you can begin your own tradition and pass these down from generation to generation. We also stock the extremely versatile Arianna Tiaras, a collection of gorgeous pieces that allows you to pick and choose your colourways from the base metals through to the colour of pearls and crystals. We have tiaras, hair vines, headbands and hair clips all waiting for you.

So where to start? Let’s talk about your wedding, what style you are going for, the time of year you are getting married, and where you get married. How might you wear your hair, and what is your wedding dress like?

We offer 45-minute styling appointments, and you are welcome to bring your wedding dress in, even if you didn’t buy it from us. By answering these questions, we will suggest things to try, and once you start-trying accessories on, you can see how they transform your look. The right combination of accessories for you can make a huge difference and you know its right if you feel fabulous and totally in love with your wedding day look.

When should I start looking for my wedding dress?

Okay, let’s be honest here. Since you decided that they were the ‘one’ for you and before they even put a ring on it, I bet you have thought about what your wedding dress will be like, at least once, haven’t you? Now that you are engaged, you can’t wait to try on dresses, and it’s going to be so much fun! But wait, the timeline from saying yes I will marry you to yes this is my wedding dress vary so much from bride to bride. Before you even book your first bridal appointment, read on for some advice on things to consider.

So before you fire off that email or call the boutique have you got your venue booked, or even a date set, do you know how much you want to spend? When you go to book, don’t be surprised if you get asked these questions, as they are relevant when finding a dress. I often get enquiries from brides who know they are getting married next year but don’t know when. I always explain that season, location, and wedding style can affect your choice of gown, a pure silk slip dress, probably won’t be suitable for a castle wedding in the Scottish Highlands in January. Yet it would be perfect for a beach wedding in the Bahamas.

How did you announce your engagement?

How did you announce your engagement?

If you are still debating on a garden marquee, a French chateau, or a secluded beach somewhere, now is not the right time to start looking. You will become frustrated, confused and disheartened without knowing when and where you are getting married. Buying a wedding dress is complicated, so I always suggest waiting until the date is agreed and the venue is secured.

Budget

We also need to talk about the dress budget. Regardless of what you say, there is no such thing as ‘I don’t have a budget’; EVERYONE has a budget. This is normally what you are comfortable spending rather than what you can afford.

You can get wedding dresses that start at £99 online and on the high street but expect to pay anything from £750 to £30,000+ for a dress from an independent boutique. At & Wolf Bridal our contemporary designer wedding dresses range in price from £1300 right up to £3500, with the majority priced at £2200 and above. We believe in being transparent with the prices of our wedding dresses and every dress in the boutique has it’s price displayed on our website as well as in the shop.

I have the date set, my venue is booked, and I know how much I want to spend. When should I go dress shopping then?

If time allows, the ideal time is about 10-12 months before your wedding day. This means that you can try dresses on in the season you are getting married, but before those appointments are made, a top piece of advice is to start a Pinterest Board if you haven’t already.

The online scrapbook allows you to make boards with lots of inspirational elements for your wedding, including your dress and how you want to look on your wedding day.  By searching and pinning dresses, you can look at designers you like and whether they fit your budget. You can then narrow your search to boutiques that stock your favourite designers. This will also help stop you and your bridal party from getting ‘White Out’ because you have no focus and visit boutique after boutique trying on dress after dress because they don’t stock what you want.

An additional tip is, don’t be afraid to whip out your Pinterest board and show it to your bridal consultant. I love a Pinterest board, and when brides share theirs, I get a real feel for what look they are trying to achieve.

Okay 10 – 12 months before my wedding seems like such a long time, are you sure?

Yes, the truth is that wedding dresses can take up to 8 months to be made, and you also need to allow another 2-3 months for alterations. Lead times vary dramatically from designer to designer, and then throw in other factors like time of year, customisation options and intricacy of design, and the time soon adds up.

I know that this seems like a really strange concept, where online shopping and warehouse bridal stores offer high-pressure selling with offers that end in 3 hours; if you don’t buy it now, it may be gone when you come back, combined with instant satisfaction of next day delivery or buy today and take it home with you. In today’s instant want-it-now climate waiting 6 days feels like a lifetime, let alone 8 months.

At & Wolf Bridal, our wedding dress collection is made to order; this is not to be confused with bespoke. Made to order means that there aren’t hundreds of dresses made in each size, just waiting to be shipped to stores. Made-to-order means exactly that, your dress starts its life when you order it. This is much more environmentally friendly, as it means less waste and designers can order just the quantities they need, and you can also customise your dress in certain circumstances.

But I want to lose weight first so I look better when trying on gowns.

Firstly, we know that you want to look your very best on your wedding day, but remember your loved one didn’t say ‘Let’s get married, but can you lose a few pounds for the day’. The truth about wedding weight loss is this, to drop a dress size in bridal you need to drop 15lbs, and whether you drop from a size 16 to a size 10 your body actual body shape will not change you will always be a pear, or inverted triangle just slimmer. If you leave it until you have lost the weight, you may lose the gown you have your heart on.

I know that you want to look your best, and for some, being measured when we are not feeling that we look our best for such an important purchase is our idea of hell, but at & Wolf Bridal we focus on fit and style, not your size. We pride ourselves on our fitting and styling service and will always make you feel comfortable and advise you on when to order. In fact, once you have chosen your gown and paid the deposit, we can defer measurements until closer to the wedding if you have ordered with more than 12 months to spare.

But wait, I have only just got engaged, and we are getting married in 6 months, does this mean that I have to buy off the rack?

No, of course, it doesn’t. You may get an okay; not a problem, but we need to order quickly. We are lucky that we do have some wedding dress designers that can deliver in very short timescales, there may be an additional charge of between 10 and 20%, but just like lead times, all designers are different.

So book your venue, create your Pinterest board, and get your gang together. Like your venue, research your dress and boutiques and be choosy about which you visit, ensuring that you visit those that match your style and budget to give you the best chance of success and saying ‘yes to the dress’. If you want luxury paired with exceptional service, then look no further than & Wolf Bridal.

So What Makes You a Luxury Bridal Boutique?

Welcome to Willoughby & Wolf

Welcome to Willoughby & Wolf

Before I opened Willoughby & Wolf, I was really undecided on whether I should use the word Luxury and kept questioning myself and others on this term, after all, I wasn’t going to be selling haute couture in fact our wedding dresses start at £1200, which for many brides is affordable. Would saying we were ‘Luxury Bridal’ put people off? Would brides think they couldn’t afford anything in our store? Or even worse, that I would be snooty and look down my nose at them? I’m only 5ft, and I can’t look down my nose at anyone!

After months of debating, going backwards and forwards, writing and editing our website and branding collateral, I finally decided on using it, and here’s why.

The definition of luxury has evolved, once upon a time luxury used to mean designer handbags, flash cars and five-star hotels. Yet in this new modern style, luxury is no longer synonymous with being exorbitant or exclusive. Luxury has moved beyond high price points, and designer labels and now revolves around so much more from an item's uniqueness to the meaning associated with something or the experience and pleasure gained.

I then sat and thought about what I was doing and offering as a luxury boutique and realised that at Willoughby & Wolf luxury is not just about a price tag, the true heart of our ‘luxe’ bridal experience is in each detail, the meaning behind the purchase and the experience of shopping for your dress with us.

One of the most frequent comments “Wow your shop is amazing, it’s so different”

One of the most frequent comments “Wow your shop is amazing, it’s so different”

We are different, we are not your average bridal boutique, and inside you will not find plush carpet, pale white walls and sparkling crystal chandeliers. The boutique itself is a reflection of my personality; we are a tiny boutique with 400 year old floor boards and beams. When you visit you will find a hint of rock n roll and a gorgeous interior design of rich dark blue with a shimmering gold ceiling, all complimented by lush tactile fabrics.

With modern luxury bridal, I know that there is a focus is on generating your own style. We specialise in contemporary wedding dresses for the modern bride. Our collection of designers and their gowns have all been handpicked, for their high-quality standards, utilising the finest fabrics and originality of design. If you want something a little different, then I believe we have something for every bride that walks through our door. What’s more, if we don’t have it quite right, we can work together to make something bespoke to you.

Hydrangeas and Accessories

Hydrangeas and Accessories

I believe in being honest and transparent in our pricing; our luxury wedding dresses start at £1200 and go up to £6000. In our boutique, you will find all of our dresses have their price clearly displayed, and I will never put a bride into a dress over her budget.

Boutique and designer wedding dresses aside, what also makes us a luxury bridal boutique and why brides choose to visit and buy from us for the first time is our experience. It gives me the greatest pleasure knowing that we provide exceptional service, helping brides find their dream dress from amongst our collection and ensuring that they leave with fond memories of their time with us.

Every bride receives the warmest of welcomes on arrival, and I start every appointment getting to know her and what the hopes and dreams for her wedding are. This is really important and helps me get to know you personally and tailor our service to you.

While the bride is choosing the first wave of dresses to try, I get busy pouring a glass of bubbles for everyone, but if it’s too early for bubbles (is it ever too early? After all it’s 6.00 pm somewhere in the world) I also serve tea and coffee.

I know that buying a wedding dress is a special occasion, and leaving the shop empty-handed can feel a little deflating, especially after such an expensive purchase. Hence, we always capture the moment, giving each bride a framed Polaroid picture of them and their bridal party.

The new definition of luxury is in the very fibre of our being. It’s the way we present ourselves, and our boutique is our collection of amazing contemporary designers. Most of all, it the way we make you feel, during your appointment. Helping you to create memories to treasure forever.

Everyone gets offered a glass of bubbles.

Everyone gets offered a glass of bubbles.

So what are my Top 3 Luxury Items

1.      Proper coffee, I can’t drink instant anymore and have a coffee machine at home, and in the boutique, apparently, I am a coffee snob, and I make no apologies for it.

2.     Spotify, I love music and being able to stream music, listen to something that has randomly popped into my head or find new artists is amazing

3.     My wedding ring, I chose a diamond channel set ring that matches my engagement ring, every time I look at it I get the warm and fuzzy’s thinking about my husband and our wedding
