Are Plain Wedding Dresses Boring?

When it comes to wedding dresses and fashion, the term "plain" might conjure images of simplicity and understatement. However, labelling plain wedding dresses as boring couldn't be further from the truth. Let's delve into why plain wedding dresses are anything but dull and how they can be the perfect choice for your big day.

Elegance in Simplicity

Plain wedding dresses exude an elegance that is both timeless and sophisticated. The beauty of these dresses lies in their simplicity, allowing the bride's natural beauty and personality to shine through. Without the distraction of heavy embellishments or intricate lace, plain wedding dresses offer a clean slate for brides who appreciate understated grace.

Versatility and Customization

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a plain wedding dress is its versatility. These dresses serve as a blank canvas, allowing for endless customization options. Whether you want to add sleeves, a statement overlay, a sparkling necklace, or a dramatic veil, a plain dress can be easily personalized to match your unique style.

A Note on Accessories

While accessorizing is a wonderful way to add personal touches, it's important to strike the right balance. When it comes to plain wedding dresses, less is often more. Adding too much sparkle, such as a glittery belt or a chunky necklace, can sometimes detract from the dress's elegant simplicity and risk making the outfit look dated. Instead, consider subtle and refined accessories that enhance rather than overwhelm the dress. A delicate piece of jewelry or a simple veil can maintain the dress's modern and timeless appeal.

Focus on Silhouette

Plain wedding dresses highlight the importance of silhouette. The cut and fit of the dress become the focal point, emphasizing the bride's figure in the most flattering way. Whether it's a sleek mermaid, a classic A-line, or a romantic ball gown, the shape of the dress can make a powerful statement on its own.

Trending Silhouettes: Basque and Dropped Waists

Two silhouettes that are making a strong comeback in bridal fashion are basque and dropped waists. These designs add a vintage charm while maintaining a modern edge. A basque waist, which dips into a V-shape, beautifully accentuates the waistline and elongates the torso, creating a flattering and regal look. Similarly, dropped waists, which sit lower on the hips, offer a sleek and elongated silhouette that is perfect for brides looking for something different and stylish.

Minimalism is Modern

In recent years, minimalism has become a major trend in fashion, and bridal wear is no exception. Modern brides are increasingly drawn to the clean lines and sophisticated simplicity of plain wedding dresses. This trend is all about stripping away the excess and focusing on what truly matters: the love and commitment shared on your wedding day.

Trending Fabrics: Crepes, Silks, Satins, Mikados, and Jacquards

The fabric of a plain wedding dress plays a crucial role in its overall impact. At & Wolf Bridal, we offer a range of luxurious fabrics that enhance the elegance of plain designs:

  • Crepe: Known for its crisp and lightweight texture, crepe drapes beautifully, creating a smooth and flattering silhouette.

  • Silk: The epitome of luxury, silk offers a soft and luminous finish, making it a timeless choice for brides.

  • Satin: With its glossy surface and substantial weight, satin brings a sense of opulence and formality to plain wedding dresses.

  • Mikado: This heavier fabric has a slight sheen and offers structure and volume, perfect for creating dramatic shapes.

  • Jacquard: Known for its intricate woven patterns, jacquard adds subtle texture and depth to plain dresses, making them unique and visually interesting.

Spotlight on the Bride

With a plain wedding dress, the spotlight remains firmly on the bride. The simplicity of the dress allows your natural beauty, radiance, and confidence to take centre stage. This can be especially appealing for brides who want their presence, rather than their attire, to be the main attraction.

Designer Appeal

At & Wolf Bridal, we stock exclusive designers who understand the art of creating stunning plain wedding dresses. Jesus Peiro, Ellis Bridals, Justin Alexander Signature, and Blue by Enzoani are just a few of the names that offer exquisite designs that are anything but boring. These bridal designers focus on high-quality fabrics, expert tailoring, and subtle details that elevate plain dresses to a whole new level of sophistication.

Are Plain Wedding Dresses In?

Now that we've established that plain wedding dresses are far from boring, let's address whether they are currently in style. Spoiler alert: they absolutely are! Here's why plain wedding dresses are a hot trend in the bridal fashion world.

Trending Minimalism

Minimalism is a major trend across all aspects of fashion, and wedding dresses are no exception. Brides today are increasingly opting for clean, simple designs that reflect their modern, sophisticated tastes. A plain wedding dress embodies this minimalist aesthetic, making it a popular choice for contemporary brides.

Celebrity Influence

Celebrities and influencers have a significant impact on bridal trends. High-profile weddings featuring brides in plain, elegant gowns have set a trend that's hard to ignore. From Meghan Markle's two looks one being a simple a-line with a bateau neck and long sleeves to her slinky and sleek halterneck by Givenchy or Hailey Bieber's chic asymmetrical dress by Vera Wang and a simple Halterneck Style by Ralph and Russo, plain wedding dresses have graced the aisles of some of the most talked-about weddings in recent years.

Versatility for All Wedding Styles

Plain wedding dresses are incredibly versatile and can be styled to suit any wedding theme, from a chic city ceremony to a rustic countryside celebration. Their simplicity allows them to be dressed up or down, making them a perfect fit for various venues and settings.

Emphasis on Quality

With the focus on minimal design, the quality of the fabric and craftsmanship becomes paramount. Brides opting for plain wedding dresses often prioritize luxurious materials and impeccable tailoring. This emphasis on quality over quantity aligns with the growing trend of sustainable and mindful fashion choices.

Timeless Appeal

Trends come and go, but plain wedding dresses have a timeless appeal that transcends fashion cycles. They offer a classic look that won't date, ensuring you look back on your wedding photos with pride for years to come. The enduring elegance of a plain dress is a testament to its lasting style.

Why do bridal boutiques charge for appointments

Okay, let’s get straight down to the nitty-gritty. I am going to talk about money. I get that we’re British, that it’s generally uncomfortable, and I know that for some, it’s a sensitive subject.

But I also know that brides to be not only wonder why some bridal boutiques charge for appointments but actually baulk or flat out refuse to pay for these.

At & Wolf, we started offering free 90 minutes appointments, but in November 2019, we decided it was time to introduce an appointment fee.

Award-winning-luxury-bridal-boutique-swindon-wiltshire-willoughby-&-wolf.jpg

Why? Because bridal boutiques do not operate like other shops. Unlike high street shops, there is no popping in and out or nipping into the changing room and asking a very busy but disinterested store assistant if it’s okay to try on a pair of jeans or battling to find your size in what sometimes feels like a bit of a jumble sale.

During your appointment, you get exclusive use of the boutique, yes, that’s right, the WHOLE boutique for just you and your group of friends and loved ones. You get refreshments and a personal stylist who will give you one-to-one attention and help you find the MOST IMPORTANT dress you will ever wear (and no, it’s NOT just a dress, it’s your wedding dress).

In early 2019 we introduced an online booking system that sends out a reminder that you have an appointment, with an option to cancel or rebook 48 hours in advance. But as much as we'd all like to believe that people would cancel an appointment or let us know they no longer need it, many don't. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have driven to work, got the boutique nice and toasty and fresh nibbles in just for a bride not to turn up.

Other times we have chatted with brides to be, to get to know what it is that they want, and they tell us one of the following:

·      I’m not buying today.

·      I want to find my style, as I think I will buy online (another blog post all of its own).

·      I want to find my style here because I have a paid appointment at X, and I don’t want to waste their time – yes, this happened several times.

·      We already have a dress, but family/friends are in town

You may want to shop around; I have already stated that this is probably the most important dress you will ever buy, and completely understandable. But our shop rent, and all the associated bills, our designers and our staff need to be paid regardless, therefore going into an independent bridal boutique without the intention of buying or being ready to buy means our business has just made a loss.

I have to say that charging for appointments wasn't the route we wanted to go down, but it does mean we can ensure our time is paid for and some of the very basic costs of running a business are covered.

We don’t feel that it is unreasonable to charge £25 for appointments; you get a 90-minute private appointment with undivided attention, assistance, and advice. (Plus, it is still cheaper, lasts longer and is probably more satisfying than a dental check-up). The £25 fee that we charge is redeemable against purchases made on the day of the appointment, and if you want to go away and think about our retrials are free.
